What is a Professional Certificate?


A Professional Certificate is a PKIoverheid certificate issued to individuals who practise a recognised profession.

All Professional Certificates are essentially the same and can be used for general applications such as:

  • Digitally signing or encrypting email.
  • Legally signing PDF documents.
  • Applying for eHerkenning EH4.

The certificate is provided on either a USB token or a smart card.

Examples of recognised professions and common applications

Profession Typical Applications
Notaries Electronic submission of documents to the Dutch Land Registry (Kadaster), CDR, and the Dutch Chamber of Commerce (KvK).
Accountants Authorization, authentication, secure communication, and digitally signing an organisation's annual financial statements.
Bailiffs Electronic submission of writs of summons, digitally signing and encrypting email, and electronic third-party attachment procedures.
