What is eHerkenning EH4? (level 4)

eHerkenning EH4 is the highest assurance level within the eHerkenning authentication system. Because of its high level of security, you can only apply for an EH4 credential if you have a personal or professional PKIoverheid certificate.

A PKIoverheid Server Certificate (also known as an SBR certificate) cannot be used with eHerkenning EH4.

With eHerkenning assurance levels EH2, EH2+, and EH3, you log in using:

  • A username
  • A password
  • A one-time verification code sent by SMS

With eHerkenning assurance level EH4, you log in using the PIN code associated with your PKIoverheid certificate. The certificate is stored on a USB token or smart card, providing a higher level of authentication and security.
